Comparing red light therapy panels

A red light therapy panel is an array of LEDs that emit red and near infrared light. The specifications that let you compare panels are the wavelengths listed in nanometres, the irradiance in mW/cm2 and the distance it was measured at, the number and power of the LEDs, and the panel size.

Check the claims behind the numbers. Irradiance figures are usually the maker's own, so look for test or certification documents, and be wary of listings that quote a figure without a measuring distance. Also check how the panel is cooled, how it is powered, and the warranty.

These panels are not a substitute for medical advice, so speak to a health professional about any health concern.

Frequently asked questions

What wavelengths should I look for?
Listings usually state red wavelengths around 630 to 660 nm and near infrared around 810 to 850 nm. Compare the exact figures each maker publishes.
Why does the measuring distance matter?
Irradiance falls as you move away from the panel, so a mW/cm2 figure only means something alongside the distance it was measured at.
