One shed won't fix a whole yard — here's what else is live.

What to check before buying a garden shed

Garden sheds come in a few different constructions, steel and resin are the two most common in Australia. Steel sheds, like everything Home & Harvest Hub stocks, generally hold up better in full sun and against impact, while resin sheds skip painting and won't rust. Worth checking too is the door mechanism: a hinged door needs clearance to swing open, a sliding door needs a clear run along the wall, and a roller door needs neither, the full opening stays clear.

Wind rating matters more than most listings make clear. Sheds built to Wind Regions A and B cover most of the Australian coastline and inland areas, but not declared cyclonic regions further north, so check this against your address before you buy, regardless of brand. Most councils don't require engineering approval for a garden shed under 10 square metres, though this varies by local government area.

Home & Harvest Hub stocks three real ranges: the Smartlocker roller door line for tight side-of-house spots (rated for wind Regions A and B), the compact Store Mate for bikes and bins, and the general-purpose YardStore range for tools, mowers and workshop-scale storage. All are Australian made. If your size doesn't appear in the range, the team can help you find the closest real fit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need council approval for a garden shed?
Generally not, provided it's under 10 square metres, though this varies by local council so it's worth a quick check before you order.
What's the difference between a roller door and a hinged shed?
A roller door coils straight up and needs no clearance in front of it. A hinged door needs room to swing open, and a sliding door needs a clear run along the wall.
Are all garden sheds rated for cyclonic wind regions?
No. Most standard garden sheds, including our Smartlocker range, are rated for wind Regions A and B, not cyclonic areas. Check your local wind rating before you buy if you're in an exposed or northern coastal area.
Does a garden shed come with a floor?
No, a base is something you prepare before delivery, not something that comes in the box. A concrete slab is the most stable option.
What size garden shed do I need?
It depends on what you're storing, not just your yard space. See our full sizing guide for a real breakdown by use case.
